Fresh From the Garden: Seasonal Salads That Never Get Boring

Local Food 06 September, 2026

A great salad starts with what is in season. Local vegetables taste better, cost less and need very little help from the dressing.

A formula that always works

  1. Greens or grains as the base: lettuce, spinach, arugula, quinoa or cooked rice.
  2. Something crunchy: cucumber, radish, bell pepper, toasted seeds or nuts.
  3. Something rich: cheese, avocado, boiled egg or grilled chicken.
  4. Something sweet or sour: tomatoes, citrus segments, apple or pickled onion.
  5. A simple dressing: three parts olive oil, one part lemon juice or vinegar, salt and pepper.

Quick seasonal ideas

  • Spring: young greens, peas and mint.
  • Summer: tomato, cucumber, red onion and basil.
  • Autumn: roasted pumpkin, spinach and walnuts.
  • Winter: citrus, fennel and olives.

Dress the salad just before serving and toss gently with clean hands.
